KONSERVASI EKOSISTEM LAUT

One of the main activities of Fish Bank Indonesia is restoring damaged marine ecosystems, starting from coral reefs to protecting coastlines from erosion.

We carry out this mission through the development of the Fishbank Bamboo Module, which serves as a medium for coral reef transplantation and as an artificial fish habitat.

The Fishbank Bamboo Module is an innovation developed by fishermen from Pantai Ria Bomo, who are part of the community-based surveillance group (Pokmaswas) Benteng Samudera. The Fishbank Bamboo Module is made from materials that are easily sourced from the local environment, such as bamboo, coconut fiber, and coconut shells, and is weighted down to allow it to be submerged.

So far, 240 Fishbank Bamboo Modules have been deployed across two areas managed by two different fishermen groups: Pantai Ria Bomo by Pokmaswas Benteng Samudera, and Pantai Badean by Pokmaswas Cahyo Mulyo.

The Fishbank Bamboo Modules are not just deployed and abandoned; they are regularly maintained by the local fishermen groups. After deployment, certified divers from among the fishermen conduct monthly evaluations to monitor, maintain, and document the growth of coral reefs on the submerged Fishbank Bamboo Modules.

The Fish Bank program also focuses on conserving coastlines that are threatened by erosion. Together with the fishermen groups, Fish Bank routinely plants casuarina trees along the shoreline of Pantai Ria Bomo to protect the beach from the threat of coastal erosion.

In other locations, Fish Bank collaborates with Pokmaswas Baret in Teluk Pang Pang, Kili Kili, to carry out reforestation of the local mangrove forests. This effort aims to strengthen the coastline and support the development of mud crab farming, which has become a vital source of income for the local fishermen.
